I have been friends with my buddy Sam Gibson for slightly more than 58 years. I know there are a few others that might have known him a little longer, but that kind of time does something to a relationship. We lifted each other up when down and had more laughs than you can imagine. Could count on each other regardless of the time or day. We camped, fished, drank, and told the same lies over and over again. I watched his family grow and welcomed their new spouses and grandchildren and enjoyed them as my own. Not often perhaps, but hopefully, enough. It might seem strange to some, but Lynn and I remain friends with all his ex's (well we might have lost 1) or like to think so. We have enjoyed sitting around with him and Linda (his keeper Sam and I would say more than once) and remind each other how lucky we have been in life. You see that is what family is all about.
We met on the Dearborn Michigan Ford Rouge plant factory floor building cars. Seemed at the time we had a little in common, not sure what, but that little hillbilly and this small-town boy got along. We had him and his family over for supper shortly after and that young hillbilly bowed his head like in prayer and never once looked up until his plate was licked clean. We went on after that, getting together with other friends, playing cards every Friday night, drinking, discovered tacos and just having a hell of a time.
I can't even begin to relive all the stories we shared but a few sticks out like the time we lived in the Rouge apartment and I contracted to paint the trim for $300. Found I was afraid of heights so Sam, our buddy HR, and Rick Monahan volunteered to help, took all summer to paint it that should have been a couple weekend job, cost me well over the $300 for beer and keeping them fed and they still wanted to split the $300. Never did a job with my buddies after that.
Then there was the time after we got the house in Ann Arbor and I was painting the outside (one story) when here comes Sam and HR, they pulled up and said we had to go fishing, I packed stuff up and we went fishing right then, right now.
Once Lynn and I came back from eating out and there they were all of them, in the city, with a fire going in our driveway. Laughed until it hurt.
One long weekend we went fishing /camping, and I had a canoe. We packed that canoe about 3 feet above the edge, HR was in front, I was in back and Sam sat on top of our pile and off we went, camped in a place where they didn't allow camping but - hey.
We would sit around campfires for more than 30 years telling the same lies over again, talk about what was on our mind, solve the world's problems, and enjoy each other's stupidity.
I have cried in desperation, hope and memories long gone, cried in relief when Doctors saved a moment, then cried when he left to join our buddy HR on a canoe ride once again. I will miss my buddy but have so many things to remember of our time together.
