Sue, Bobby, Melissa, Carter, Kenadie, Samuel & Friends,
Some of y’all probably knew Travis a lot better than I did even though he was my first cousin, but I knew Travis better than most of y’all did as a kid. We spent the first 8 years of our lives together. We even were in the same Second Grade Class I think at either East or West Elementary I don’t remember...btw that teacher hated me, and loved Travis, he was her favorite but I don’t remember her name because I blocked it out for my own sake.
At one point in time my mom, sister and me lived with Sue, Travis & Melissa. We weren’t only first cousins but we became best friends and siblings in a way. I may only have spent a short time in my life knowing Travis but I’m left with a lifetime of great memories.
Today I’d like to honor the Travis I knew by sharing some of those memories with you all. If you don’t know, Travis was a very stubborn person, but so am I. That’s probably what led to many of our “competitions” as kids. We were always trying to one up each other trying to prove who was strongest or fastest or bravest. One way we did this was by having “wrestling matches” WWE Style in the living room floor with each of our moms in opposite corners cheering us on & refereeing. Travis loved Hulk Hogan!
Just so you know, even though he was bigger, I always won! I used my signature headlock move on him. Our moms would ring the Bell & he’d get soo mad he’d wait until I tired turn my back to walk off with my victory strut to sucker punch me. I won every time & got sucker punched every single time!
We played outside a lot! One of the places we lived, above B&B woodshop had a hug red clay hill behind it, a wooded area & a storage building. We always got in trouble for exploring the woods far from our house and climbing the red clay hill. Usually, we were pretending to be Ninja Turtles, Travis was always the Red one, Raphael & I was always the Orange one Michelangelo because he loved pizza. One time Travis and one of his friends got in trouble for busting the Windows out of that storage building.
For family celebrations we would go to deep creek & it was always a big deal. We would spend the day bbqing, playing in the creek, building dams, searching for crawdads & salamanders. We’d end the day with a huge watermelon. What perfect summer days. We would drive down the roads blasting achey Breaky Heart, you know, the first time mullets were “a thing”. Other days were spent at the park district pool near deep creek where Travis and I had dive competitions & trying to swim to the bottom of the 9ft part.
All of us kids were always outside playing. We even all played T-Ball together. Myself, My sister Nikole, Melissa & Chrystal Enloe played on B&B woodshop tball team. Travis played on another team. Travis took tball very seriously, and would refuse to look, smile or wave at me on game day even though we were cousins, best friends and like siblings. He was more focused on beating our team and winning, no time for being friendly to the competition. Travis was amazing at T-Ball.
When we got a little order and we moved away we would visit every once in a while from Illinois. Travis, Melissa, Nikole & I continued to search the creeks for crawdads & Salamanders but now instead of setting the crawdads fee Travis insisted on keeping them for fishing. As we got even older Travis and Melissa found their best friends in Bryson that became like family to them. We would see less and Less of them when we visited because they had their own lives, but I always knew it was because Travis was usually off Fishing or hunting with his buddies & Melissa was hanging with her best friend.
I’m 36 now, only a couple months older than Travis. From the stories I’ve heard of him being an adult, I don’t think he changed much from the kid I knew. Travis loved being outdoors, especially fishing, Travis loved Sports Especially baseball & I think Basketball (he went through a basket phase in HS if I remember correctly), Travis loved music & loved being with his Friends and Family. Travis was probably the most stubborn person I knew besides my other family members, my husband and myself. Life, distance, & careers separated us, but I’ll Always love Travis, Melissa & Sue the way I did when I was a kid. I’ll always Remember Travis’s Smile, he had the best, his goofy sense of humor, his dedication to being a father, & his stubbornness (being stubborn isn’t a bad thing). We all love you Travis, thank you for allowing us to be apart of your life even if it was for a small glorious moment in our lifetime. Rest Easy Cousin.
