My dad Clark Wilder and I would make many trips to Bryson City just to spend the day with Gene.
We would always have a good time. We went fishing together. I think my Dad may have done some work with him at Sonoco at
one time or another. Gene drove all the way to greenville to be with my dad when my mom died.
He was such a good friend to my daddy. Gene will be missed and thank you for your service. Our deepest sympathy
to all of the family. Becky (Wilder) Akins

I went to school with Gene and will always remember him as a gentleman. Thank you for your service in Vietnam. My sincerest condolences to all his family.

Sorry to hear of the passing of Gene. He was a good man. I known Gene for a couple years and always like to talk with him. He always had a smile and wanted to shoot pool but never got a chance to. But now in heaven, Gene can shoot all he wants now. Prayers for the family

Gene was only 10 years older than me. When he got out of service he came to Gastonia driving a shiny convertible corvette. I had been out of school with the flu, feeling better, so it was just me and mom at home. He looked at me and said “let’s go for a ride”. We rode for a long time through the country not saying much. It took me a little time to realize what the ride was all about. My pop, Wes, explained that Gene had been through and seen some awful stuff in Vietnam and just needed to feel normal. I hope he enjoyed the ride as much as I did!!

We are all saddened to hear of the loss of Gene. We didnt get to see him often, but when we did, he made us feel like we were his best and only friends. My son Daniel will be very sad when we tell him. Gene always made Daniel feel loved and encouraged just with his words and infectious smile and LOVE for life.
Gene will be missed everyday, but will always be remembered as a lover of life. What a tremendous legacy!!
