Steve taught my daughter to flyfish on Hazel and we will be forever grateful to his patient, fun instruction that we share together now. RIP Steve, the world is a little less fun without you.

Steve was one of the most unique individuals I have ever had the privilege of calling 'friend'. Working with him during my time with Swain County Schools was an experience I truly treasure. The first time I met him it was like we had known each other forever. He was one of the kindest persons I have ever met.
My prayers are with you family members he has left behind. May your grief be lessened by the many positive and uplifting memories he leaves in our community.
Sincerely,
J Gilbert

Our hearts & prayers are with you all. We have fond memories of Mustard Seed, as we thru hiked the AT in 2016 with him. First meeting him in Hot Springs and leap frogging each other on the trail. A trail angel delivered several pizzas to Mustard Seed at the shelter we were at and we all enjoyed dinner together that night! We feel blessed to have met Steve and will cherish our pictures and memories we shared!! XO Big Cypress &Moonbeam aka Two Peas

Steve was a grade higher than myself in High School, however we did socialize during school events. He was a leader, and well thought of by his classmates. His accomplishments in life are outstanding, and his fight to the end even more outstanding. He helped people, and believed in God. And for that, he was welcomed into the gates of heaven, to live forever. Until we meet again my friend....

Steve Claxton was indeed a larger-than-life figure. Not so much because of feats of prowess (although he had several of those), but because of how he supported others and that he made others feel important. I miss the times that I was not around because I was away either overseas or several states away. I still feel we really connected over the past 30 years because we were able to share our faith journeys with each other and because each other's journey meant a lot to each other. We both shared a love for family and a love for doing what we felt God was calling us to do - make this world a better place and spread His love. I promise to carry on this tradition brother. Always knowing that you are up there helping God guide me on.

As others have said Steve was a wonderful person. He was my classmate and a good friend to all who knew him. Hold tight to your beautiful memories and he will always be with you. May God bless and comfort you during this difficult time.

Steve was the big brother every boy imagines, but that the real big brother never truly fulfills that vision. I can honestly say that Steve did and then some. We were truly inseparable. We were always in the same school from kindergarten at church through High School He was the athletic one and I always dreamed I would be like him. We played Mites and Midget youth football on the same team year after year. We played Little League baseball on the same team every summer (go RC Cola Bottling Company). Our team was incredible with Gary & Alan Brown, Nat Watson, Max Witt, Steve, Little Rock Shular, and other superstars whose names are lost to the vagaries of time but whose faces I still recall. Anytime I got in trouble or was upset during school, my teacher would go get Steve from the next grade and bring him down to talk to me. I always ended up feeling ashamed during our talks. We played basketball together for 3 years for the Maroon Devils and I know our Coach, Joe Meyers, chose me for the team to make my mother (Phyllis a loved teacher at Swain) and Steve, happy. Steve nominated me for inclusion into to the Swain High Hall of fame because I am the only person who played and lettered for 4 years of varsity basketball and never scored a single point. One year at a game at Glenville Steve told me to stand at center court while Glenville was shooting a free throw on a foul caused by Steve. He called it bird dogging. The foul shot hit the rim and Steve got the rebound. He threw it to me as I was racing toward our goal and attempted a layup..... that I missed. I got the rebound and attempted another shot...missed a second time....but got fouled. Shot two foul shots and missed them both. I made Four attempts at a basket and missed all 4 within seconds of each other. Steve came up to me and said he was never going to do that again...and of course, being the sweetheart he was, he did exactly that over several other games until he graduated. In High School Steve was the Student of the Month...it was the only time I ever recall the Student Paper ever honored anyone with that designation accompanied with a photo in the front page of the paper. I can fill volumes with stories about Steve, but no one would ever capture or express the love I felt for this amazing Human Being who I was fortunate to call my Big Brother. williamclaxton@yahoo.com

To all of Steve's family, please accept my heartfelt condolences at your loss of a wonderful individual. Even though I was more than a decade older than him, I had contact with throughout his life--initially in Bryson City Presbyterian Church, through knowing both of his parents well, having his most welcome encomium for a book I wrote on fishing in the Park, in connection with the Swain Athletic Hall of Fame, and his graciousness in helping out with audio-visual arrangements connected with my father's 100th birthday celebration, and more.
Our shared love of fly fishing was especially important, and whenever someone asked me about local guides, Steve was always one of those I could recommend without reservation.
He made a notable impact on the world in which he lived and through which he moved, and when that can be said of anyone theirs has been an existence of importance.

Becky, Family and Friends. STEVE was a great friend and mentor to me. An amazing fly fisherman and Guide, he frequently held me by the scruff of the neck mid stream so I could venture to the best spots; as a backpacker, and camper, he encouraged me to venture into the mountains to places I never thought I could go (and probably should not have). As a back country cook he could work magic over an open fire that equaled five star restaurants; as an educator he had an amazing passion for the outdoors and love of helping youngsters learn and embrace the wonders and values of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. As a man I looked up to him; he had no equal.
Steve led many groups on fly fishing camping trips along Hazel CREEK. I was privileged to join him on a few of them. On at least three occasions, Steve drove to Cincinnati as a presenter at our fly fishing club meetings.
It was our privilege for my wife, Kathy and I to visit with Steve and Becky just a couple weeks ago. It was a warm and friendly visit I will long remember. Steve will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by all; especially me.

Claxton Family:
Prayers for you all. Steve was a great person. I had an opportunity to see him a few months ago. I felt sad his health was failing but his spirit of never giving up was always evident. He shared with me how Sonja Mason was one of his favorite people. We talked about how much I missed her. She was my best friend and my sister. Crazy to read he died on the same day as she did. Heaven has gained an angel. May GOD hold you close in the days to come.

To Becky and family,
As you and so many are aware, Steve was a life-saver to the children of Honduras when he took on the Appalachian Trail hike raising money for the Friends of Barnabas Foundation when Kyle Kirby was injured. Although he was known as “Mustard Seed” along the Trail, it was clear that his faith as well as his determination to serve God and help those less fortunate were even more gigantic than the mountains that he hiked. I’ve no doubt he left “mustard seeds” of faith and inspiration with all those he touched along the Trail and throughout his life. Heaven has a most blessed new angel and I am proud to have met such a remarkable individual. My thoughts and prayers are with you.
