Charlie, I knew when I first met you and Virginia we would be friends. I loved you telling us stories, even though I almost needed a translator at first. That thick southern accent was a challenge for me and I think you thought I was hard of hearing since I asked you to repeat yourself several times! As you smiled through the aggravation of it all you always made me laugh. I think fondly of our adventures; pulling my husband’s Cadillac out of the mud at Nantahala; and you asking who would take a Cadillac through that kind muddy road?! Then you saying something about a Yankee and laughing and giving me that wonderful smile of yours. That smile that could light up a room. Taking me over the swinging bridge to go fishing and jumping up and down on that darn bridge, almost gave me a stroke! Seeing a wolf off in the distance; which wasn’t far enough for me, while fishing and telling me to ignore it and not to worry as the wolf would know exactly what I was doing, which frightened me even more; somehow I think you knew that! The fish fries and telling me about the gin - sing and most of all making that noise with your fingers in my ear thinking a bug was going to get me. I fell for it every time; and now every time I think a bee or bug is near my ear I will think of it as you saying hello. Charlie I’m glad I got a warm smile and hug when I saw you in July; even though my heart is heavy that I will not see you the next time I visit the memories and kindness you showed me are gifts I will always treasure. Give Virginia a hug for me.
Thank you for letting me call you friend,
Jennifer
