Malcolm Estrada, Chattanooga Chess club posted a condolence
Tuesday, May 17, 2016
I only just learned of Ellis' passing from the organizer of the Tennessee Senior Open Chess Tournament in Crossville. There are so many great memories I have of Ellis at the Chattanooga Chess Club as well as traveling with him to and competing with him at chess tournaments around Tennessee. He was a man of great compassion and good humor.

I don't know the words to express how I feel.
Ellis was a treasure to have in the chess club, but I would have liked him just as much even if he didn't play chess. His coworkers at Harrah's told me "finest man I know" , "my best friend" etc. , So he was a lovely man, chess or not.
If I had any idea he would be leaving us so soon, I would have spent all the time I could around him.
May God be with Mary and the family.
Ellis' friend, Bruce Goodwin

We will miss Ellis. He was a good soul. Ellis was a pleasure to be around as well as a great mentor to any chess player interested in improving his skills. His tales of his chess experiences were always entertaining and informative.
