Obituary of Robert Elwood White

Robert E. White, 75, of Bryson City passed away unexpectedly at home in his sleep Wednesday, December 17, 2014. A native of Swain County, he was the son of the late Jeard and Amy Edwards White. He spent 47 ½ years with the public school system with the last 13 years serving as Superintendent of Swain County Schools. He played football for four years at Swain County High School. He was a starter at Appalachian State University making All American during his collegiate career. He was an avid lover of football. He served as vice chairman of the Swain County Commissioners for four years and concurrently served as Chairman of the Board of Swain County Department of Social Services. He was the patriarch of Swain County. He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Denise White; son, Zeke White of the home; two children from his first marriage, Nick White and wife Kelly of Bryson City, Jill Owen and husband Tom of Sugar Hill, GA; three grandchildren, Shelby and Sam Owen and Andrew White; step son, Lance Frizzell; brother, Dennis White and wife Debi of Bryson City; nephew, David White and wife Richa Angel of Bryson City; and niece, Tiffany Bowers and husband Sammy of Bryson City. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm Monday at the Swain County High School Gymnasium. Pastors John Tagliarini and Jeff Helpman will officiate with vocals by Troy and Tammy Burns. Burial will be in Swain Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm Monday at the School. Online condolences at www.crispfuneralhome.org
