Bryson City …………………Dateline Gordon James Gunter, 92, departed this Earthly Life, Wednesday March 9, 2011. He was the son of the late Frank and Amanda Barker Gunter. Gordon was a retired mechanic , carpenter and farmer. He served in the Civilian Conservation Corp. and later in the U.S. Army, rising to the rank of Sergeant with the First Infantry Division where he saw action in Europe from June of 1944 until Germany surrended in April of 1945. He served as Military Police at the Nuremberg trials. He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years Mildred Greene Gunter. He is survived by 2 Sons- Gary and his wife Elaine Faw Gunter of Cleveland , TN Boyd Andre and his wife Shelley Edwards Gunter of Bryson City 2 Grandchildren- Nicole Gunter and Jennifer Gunter Caballero and her husband Joshua. 3 Sisters- Norah Gunter Green, Donna Gunter Bowers and Easter Gunter Herron 2 Sisters in laws- Rose Cantrell Greene and Christine Southards 2 Brothers-in-law- Willard Smith and David Embler He is also survived by many nieces and nephews Funeral Services will be held 1:00 PM Saturday at Mt. Vernon Freewill Baptist Church of which he was a Member. The Revs Jeff Waldroup and Max Cochran will officiate with burial in Brendle Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 PM Friday at Crisp Funeral Home where the body will remain until placed in the Church 30 minutes prior to the service. Pallbearers will be Jeff Gunter, Lance Gunter, Frank Gunter, Ben Gunter, Dwight Gunter, and Tim Hensley. Ronnie Greene will serve as honorary pallbearer.
