Obituary of Kermit Madison Johnson

Bryson City Dateline Kermit Madison Johnson, 88, of the Grassy Branch Community went home to be with the Lord Saturday, February 12, 2011 in a Swain County Hospital. A native of Swain County, he was the son of the late Joseph Garrett and Catherine Lindsey Johnson. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran having served in WWII. Mr. Johnson was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church and a past member of the VFW. He was a member of the United Steel Workers of America for 35 years. He was preceded in death by his first wife and mother of his children, Roxie Dale White Johnson; and a daughter, Deborah Johnson. He is survived by his wife, Wanda Wood Johnson; one son, Kermit Madison Johnson, Jr. and wife Nancy of Lincoln Park, Michigan; two grandchildren, Stefanie and Kristopher Johnson; five step children, Judy Cuccia, Norman Carpenter, Richard Carpenter, Lynda Bunch, and Glenda "DeeDee" Nelson. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Crisp Funeral Home. Rev. Peter Mudge will officiate with burial in Swain Memorial Park with military rites being conducted by the Steve Youngdeer American Legion Post 143, Cherokee, NC. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Donations may be made to the Bryson City Mt. Zion Baptist Church Building Fund.
