I sat with Dot on the weekends and I really enjoyed staying with her and hearing of her love of hiking, golfing, and nature itself. I loved hearing talk of the different things that she experienced in her 100 years of life. I know that I will miss her greatly.

We hiked with Dottie for many years. She was a walking encyclopedia. If we saw a different flower she immediately knew what it was. She could walk faster than most of our group. The last time I saw her was at Deep Creek at her 100th birthday party. She was remarkable. She entertained everyone with her remembrances. We will definitely miss her a lot.

Our connection/friendship with Dot goes back many years. Tom's parents, Chuck & Lora Greenawalt, as well as his Uncle Earl & Aunt Ted Hennessee were friends of Dot & Earl as well as Dot's parents, the Stouts. When we took over the Hennessee home, (Galunlati), Dot & I became hiking buddies. I am ever so grateful for her patient instruction & information about the names of multitudes of the beautiful wildflowers in this area. Dot learned this infor-mation from her Mother, Mrs. Stout, who used to ride through the park with the Park Rangers. We have hiked so many trails and revelled in the beauty of countless wildflowers and birds through the past 19 years. She knew exactly which spot along the trail to anticipate specific rare flowers. And season after season these rare flowers would be waiting for her to welcome them and be appreciated. Though Dot was many years older than me, she would have to pause to wait for me to catch up with her on the trail inclines. She was so patient and we had so many pleasurable hours together. I miss her greatly already! But as I come across our favorite flowers, I'll remind them that she has passed along boundless appreciation for their beauty to all the hikers who enjoyed her companionship along the trail.

I send my sympathy in the passing of a great hiker who shared a fountain of knowledge about the wild flowers and bird with others. She will be missed by many.

Dot and I enjoyed many years of hiking the trails in the Great Smoky Mountains. I will miss her and her vast knowledge of the forrest. She taught me so much about the beautiful wildflowers and the birds of our area. She will be missed greatly by our group of Senior Citizens who hiked with the Swain County Recreation Dept.
