I'm the Director of Environmental Programs for the Cherokee Nation. I met Calvin over 30 years ago while serving on the EPA National Tribal Operations Committee. Calvin served several years as the Chair of the National Tribal Caucus and was a strong and dedicated advocate for Tribal Sovereignty. I firmly believe that Calvin's steadfast work contributed to the establishment and sustainability of all Tribal Environmental Programs. It was an honor to call him my friend and to have the opportunity to work with him.
My sincerest condolences to his family and friends during this time... Just know that the protection of the environment and natural resources in Indian Country is greater for the work he did.

I knew Calvin from the Southwestern Tech Environmental Science curriculum in 1972-1973 time-frame. He was fresh out of the Army, and I was fresh out of Franklin High School. We survived there for 2 years and both found jobs afterwards.
I kept up with Calvin over the years and visited him at Tribal Utilities a few times. I considered him to be a fine human being and old friend. Wished that I had kept closer touch but life gets in the way sometimes.
The obituary was moving to me, and I'm sure Calvin is pleases. God bless the family.

I worked at Tribal Construction years ago and he was the Executive Manager over the whole Public Works Division. Between him and the late Teddy Rose, we were always treated accordingly!! Calvin was the man that paved the way for a lot of folks to be moved up into leadership positions. He was a good manager, a right fine leader that was always looking for ways to improve and grow all the programs he over saw. So sorry for our loss. He was a man with a vision!!
