Eulogy: We’ll be Okay Mammaw
I want to say a few words about my sweet mammaw, or rather to her. When I visited mammaw for the last time in the ER she told me she just hopes we’re all okay because she sensed the end was near. Typical mammaw- always more worried about others more than herself. So this is the response I wish I had in that moment:
We’ll be okay, mammaw. We’ll be okay because we got to spend our entire lives with you and learning from you. I learned I was pretty bad at backseat singing and what car sickness was from riding with you to gymnastics practice everyday around hwy 28. You taught me how to sew and how to “cook” even if that was just letting me create slime out of all your kitchen canister contents- flour, sugar, coffee, and water. I also learned that you’re fearless against a copperhead as long as you have a hoe in your hand. That cornbread and warm milk make a good bedtime snack and that peanut butter balls make nearly everything better (she told me I made her day when I snuck some peanut butter balls in the ER for her that last time I saw her). I also learned that when you were in school memorizing poetry was part of the curriculum and that papaw won you over with a little love poem he clipped from the newspaper.
But more than anything you’ve taught me and our family how to be good people. How to always put our best foot forward- even if that means not going out in public without our hair done, to be humble, to have a helpful spirit, to care deeply about those we love, and to put others first. But most of all we’ll be okay because you set an example of how to be strong and resilient- how to experience hard times and loss with grace. This family has lost a lot of loved ones too early, and while those losses live with us, everyone is still loving and caring when it could have made us cold. I read a quote the other day that said “there’s a crack in everything, that’s how the light gets in” and you’ve shown us how to let the light in. So we’ll be okay mammaw. We’ll be sad you’re gone, but you live on in all of us. More than I ever realized up until these last few years. You lived a good long life, and like you said last week in the hospital “none of us get out of this alive.” We knew you would hang on as long as you could for us, but we also knew this day would come. So we will celebrate your life and cherish our memories of the time we had with you and continue living our lives with those values you’ve nurtured. So we’ll be okay mammaw - all because of you.
Say hello to those we love that beat you to the pearly gates for us - I know you’re enjoying that beautiful reunion. We love you mammaw, and we will be okay. Rest easy.
Love,
Joule

You all have my deepest sympathy. Floye and Percival were close friends to my parents, Clyde and Bertha DeHart. Floye was a dear saintly woman. Her entire family has meant so very much to all of us. Floye was my brother, Clifford's, supervisor at Swain Hospital. We grew up knowing her children and her siblings. She will be missed by many.

Floye was my first mother-in-law but she was so much more than that. She was always so kind to me and I loved her dearly. We shared the love of yard sales and I enjoyed going to them with her. She also let me look in and learn from her in the kitchen. She made me feel like a part of the family as did the rest of the family. I have so many fond memories of being a part of her family. My love to Raymond, Maxine, and Anita and all of their families. She will truly be missed.
