Obituary of James Thomas Cloer

James “Thomas” Cloer, 80, of the Alarka community went home to be with the Lord on April 26, 2022. A Swain County native, he was the son of the late David and Hester Cloer; and also preceded in death by his brothers Carroll and Kenneth Cloer and nephews, Charles and Steve Cloer.
He was a member of Mt. Vernon Freewill Baptist Church, where he served as deacon and choir leader for over 50 years. He loved his church and church family and loved to sing in the church choir.
He was a veteran of the US Army and served in Vietnam. He was retired from the Swain County School System.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Frances; brother, Russell Cloer (Elsie), sister-in-law, Myrtle Cloer; very special family friends, Beth Gibson and Sarah, Darrell and Jill Thompson, and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm Friday at Mt. Vernon Freewill Baptist Church. Revs. Jeff Waldroup and Chris Nations will officiate with burial in Swain Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 12 to 2 pm Friday at the church.
