Often times in life we encounter a person at a young age who makes a significant impact in our lives. It can be a parent, relative or even a teacher. For me it was not an adult, but rather a cousin/best friend. I spend nearly every day of my childhood up until the sixth grade with you. The only time we were apart was when you went to North Carolina or when I went on vacation. We both went to the San Juan Day School and I was a grade ahead of you. We would share a classroom and teacher every other year due to the Day School being set up that way.
We both played Little League on the San Juan Lasers and usually lost more than we won. But let you tell the recap and we were a few calls away from winning every one of them. We both played the guitar for music class. While I was learning how to properly play the guitar chords; you were already convincing the music teacher you had Amarillo by Morning down pat. We also played basketball for the Day School, I played for the 6th grade team and you for the 5th grade team. I got to admit you were the best player on either team and often wished we were teammates.
During the summers we played all the sports, often times it was just the two of us. From sun up to sun down, it seemed as if we were always outside. Sometimes for lunch, we would put our change together and go get a burger and fries at the Tewa Restaurant (and it was a good thing Ms. Rochie did not add very well). We spent our times talking about Porsches, Tennis Shoes and how we were going to be professional athletes. We also dreamed of the day when our parents would get us a Nintendo or cable TV. Our thrill would be going to Curtis Mathis to rent a VHS tape on Fridays. We would stay up watching the rented horror movie and you would be up all night long.
These were just a few of the memories I have of us together as children. Earlier I said you made an impact on my life and you truly did. You were always happy and never let anything get you down. You always had self-confidence and were tough, but also had a softer side. You made me feel as if I could accomplish anything and you were always there, right by my side. If I got in trouble, you got in trouble and vice versa. We would dance on the feast day and then hit up the carnival. Man we had it all at that age and didn’t know it. The smell of the diesel engine, corndogs frying and the wind blowing through our hair. We were truly on top of the world.
I could write more stories that could fill up a book. But it seems that you are on a new journey as your time on this earth has come to an end. I will never let your memory or spirit die as long as I live. I will dance for you, shot a basketball and throw a football with you in mind. I will continue to cheer on our beloved Skins and maybe once in a while I will cheer for UNC. I love you and will never forget you. Nathan Tsay Whang Garcia.
Always,
Ira
