Obituary of Raymond O'Neal Muse
Please share a memory of Raymond to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Raymond O’Neal Muse, 91, of Bryson City passed away on Tuesday, February 11, 2020 surrounded by his loving family. He was born on May 28, 1928 in Bryson City, North Carolina to Raymond and Ida Muse. He is preceded in death by siblings Reva Redmon, Orene DeBord, and Roy Muse.
He graduated from Swain County High School in 1945 and completed post-graduate coursework in bookkeeping from 1950 to 1951. He served the Town of Bryson City in various roles as Clerk and Supervisor of the CETA Program.
As Finance Officer for Swain County, he was responsible for fiscal oversight for county government. As Transportation Director for the Department of Social Services, he assisted individuals with obtaining reliable transportation for medical appointments. Retiring at 85, O’Neal left an indelible mark on Bryson City through ongoing advocacy and involvement.
Many remember the twenty-seven years (1950-1977) he spent working at Bennett’s Drug Company as a bookkeeper, manager of payroll, and cook. The iconic sign still stands on Main Street as a reminder of simpler times spent at the local soda shop.
A life-long community builder, O’Neal was a veteran of the United States Navy, a proud member of the Democratic Party, and an active member of the local Jaycee Club. A sports enthusiast, he was a board member of the Swain County Hall of Fame and spearheaded the creation of youth football programs.
O’Neal is survived by the love of his life Sara Robinson, son Danny Muse (Debbie); daughters Rita Mattox (Johnny), Glenda Cole, Margaret Ann Fisher, and Erica Muse; nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by son Jeff Muse.
