Obituary of Barbara Josephine Maney

Please share a memory of Barbara to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Barbara Josephine Greene Maney, our beautiful and loving  Wife, Mother, “Ma”, Sister, and Aunt, went home to be with our Lord on Wednesday, January 16, 2019, at the age of 85. She suffered with Alzheimers for many years but fought her battle courageously to the end.  Barbara was born in Bryson City, NC on March 12, 1933 and attended Swain County High School and resided in Pisgah Forest, NC at the time of death. She and the love of her life were married in 1949 and moved to Brevard, NC in 1951 and resided in the area raising their family the rest of her life. They recently celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary. Barbara was the anchor of the family and loved taking care of everyone. She had a heart of gold and now is our very special guardian angel in heaven continuing to care for us all. Her legacy will live on. She was one of 8 children and the first one to pass from this life. With a large family came her belief in the importance of family. She was always a solid constant for our family in tough times and would drop everything to help us. We hold many memories of family reunions with so many great-aunts and -uncles and second cousins and with her assuring everyone was fed and cared for.

Barbara is preceded in death by her parents, Dessie and Glen Greene of Bryson City NC, and her daughter, Deborah (Debi) Fields.

Barbara is survived by the love of her life and husband of 69 years, Ernest Ray Maney of Pisgah Forest NC, three children: Sandra Odom (Doyle) of Madison AL, Bruce Maney (Donna) of Brevard NC, Donna Duty (Michael) of Cramerton NC, and son-in-law Jay Fields of Richlands NC.

She is survived by a large and loving extended family that includes many sublings, nieces and nephews. Thus includes her seven surviving brothers and sisters: Juanita Milner of Brevard NC, Evelyn Woody of Bryson City NC,  Joseph Greene of Bryson City NC, Paul Greene of Lincolnton NC, Bill Greene (Patricia) of Mt. Holly NC, Glenith Price of Brevard NC, and Kathy Dehart(Elmo) of Bryson City NC.

She was always fond of saying she had 9 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild. These include grandchildren, Rene Watson (Scott) of Cookeville TN, Shelly Putnam (Marty) of Lake Toxaway NC, Carla Blankenship (Britt) of Madison AL, Jennifer Suttle (John) of Mt. Holly NC, Christopher Duty (Kate) of Cary NC, Nicole Jewell (Andy) of Summerville SC, Heather Scott(Justin) of Richlands NC, Joshua Maney of Dacusville SC, Ryan Odom (Allison) of Huntsville AL, great grandchildren: Cody Buchanan, Austin Herndon, Ethan Herndon, John Mark Blankenship, Mitchell Watson, Samuel Blankenship, Spencer Duty, Kayli Scott, Dylan Watson, Katelyn Blankenship, Owen Jewell, Sarah Blankenship, Davis Duty, Carter Duty, Landon Suttle, Karli Scott, Hadley Gaskins, Caedan Suttle, and Caroline Jewell.
