Evelyn's family,
Evelyn was a very sweet person. She loved people, especially kids. She wanted to help every one of them. God blessed her with something so many of us don't have. She was not just a teacher. She was a special teacher.
She will be missed by everyone who loved her. I know she has met her loved ones that are already in heaven, and is rejoicing. I know the first person she wanted to meet was her savoir.
I'm praying for you all as you are to face some difficult days ahead.
Love and Prayers,
Theresa Cunningham Moss

Frances, John, Joe, and Chris, there are NO words to say to you that can make you not sink your head with tears of sadness and wonder why. BUT, I am so glad that your Mother made it to Heaven before Evelyn because your anguish could not compare to your Mother's.
I did not know Evelyn or Francis as well as you, John, or you, Joe, but knowing she was your sister, and your Mother's daughter alone made her a fine woman. I know that she will be missed dearly, and I pray that the reason for her quick departure will be revealed in the coming days ahead.
My prayers and love are with you all.
Sincerely and Respectfully,
Connie Allen

Evelyn was a Angel in my life. I will miss our talks about our families. She always kept me up on Chris and the kids , Joe and John ,all the nieces and nephews. I’d let her know how mom and dad were and Savannah Lynn and Harold. Evelyn always made sure from the time I was little that I got to go places. She’d take me to the movies after church on Sunday's. She’d show up and take me swimming. I only went trick or treat once in my life. I was 8 and Evelyn took me. I will always cherish the memories with Evelyn. She was a great person. I will always love you Evelyn, thank you for being so good to me.

Miss Evelyn
I have worked in education much of my life and never encountered anyone quite like Evelyn Herrin. Inside her classroom, she exercised a high degree of autonomy. She decided when to slow down to make sure all of her students fully understood a concept, or when a different instructional strategy was needed to meet the needs of a few who were struggling to keep up. She build relationships with students from a variety of backgrounds and with a diverse array of needs, and she found ways to motivate and engage them.
Evelyn was not afraid of hard work. After school every Tuesday I would meet up with her on the SCC campus in Swain County. She would be completing her on-line classes to earn her teaching degree. I said, “Evelyn, you know on-line classes carry a heavier work load than the classes on campus.” She said, “I know, but I kind of enjoy it.”
I have a deep and genuine appreciation for the hard work she put into earning her teaching degree. Working full time and taking college courses takes grit, stamina, perseverance, and a belief in oneself that they can make a difference. And that she did!
Evelyn did not enter the profession for the money. She became a teacher to make a difference in the lives of children. Thus her philosophy of education was The Star Fish Story. I could just see her grinning and saying, “We made a difference in that one’s life.” Notice Evelyn would have said ,“We made a difference.” While I would say, “No Evelyn, you made a difference.” That is the way she was. She did not want to be in the spotlight. Over the years educating children has become more diverse and challenging because of our ever changing culture and the problems kids bring into the classroom. Evelyn met these challenged head on with high expectations for her students to show growth every year she taught them. She treated her students with love and dignity. Many times I would walk into a classroom to observe and Evelyn would be in the back of the room at a round table with one of her students giving them one-on-one instruction. I have observed her many times in her classroom with small groups of children so close she could reach out and touch them, always making eye contact to be sure the students understood the concept she was teaching.
You did this Miss Evelyn! You made a difference in many a child’s life through your hard work, caring attitude, and a belief that every child can learn. Evelyn Herron was respected by her students, valued by her co-workers, and she fully supported her school and school system.

Evelyn Herrin’s Education Philosophy
“The Star Fish Story”
One day, an old man was walking along a beach that was littered with thousands of starfish that had been washed ashore by the high tide. As he walked he came upon a young boy who was eagerly throwing the starfish back into the ocean, one by one.
Puzzled, the man looked at the boy and asked what he was doing. Without looking up from his task, the boy simply replied, “I’m saving these starfish, Sir”.
The old man chuckled aloud, “Son, there are thousands of starfish and only one of you. What difference can you make?”
The boy picked up a starfish, gently tossed it into the water and turning to the man, said, “I made a difference to that one!”
