Obituary of Troy Walls

Troy M. Walls Sr., the son of Epp & lola Walls of the Almond community passed away on Wednesday May 2nd, 2012 at his home after an extended period of declining health. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter Malinda Walls Hooper, brothers Jack Walls, Sr., Robert "Bob" Walls, Willard Walls, Paul Walls, Roy Walls, sisters Pansy Early, Jesse Walls and Fannie Sue Woodard. He is survived by his wife Teresa Greene Walls of the home, three sons; Troy "Buddy" Walls, Jr. and wife Ann of Bryson City, Epp "Butch" Walls and wife Kathleen of liberty, Ky., and Garland E. Walls and wife Rita of Bryson City and a stepson Andrew Davis and fiancée Amanda Howard of the home. He is survived by six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, brother Earl Walls and wife Susan of Blue Springs, MO.,sisters Ruby Haney of Bryson City, Maxine Wright of Bryson City and Joyce Wiggins and husband Dave of Bryson City. He served in the United States Marine Corps as an infantry soldier, later becoming a NCO. He served for six years and is a veteran of the Korean War having served thirteen months in hand-to-hand combat where he sustained injury and was awarded a Purple Heart. He also earned the Korean Service Medal with three bronze stars, Navy Unit Commendation Medal, Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Korean Presidential Unit Citation & United Nations Service Medal and was a rifleman marksman. He assisted with coaching the mites and midgets football teams in Swain County for twelve years and was very active in community services. He drove stock cars for many years. He owned and operated Walls Transmission in Bryson City for twenty years. He is a lifetime member of the VFW and DAV. He was an avid outdoorsman and was a well known bear hunter. He worked on many construction projects throughout the southeast. He loved life and the adventures that it brought. He was considered by many to be a legend in his own time and was a trusted friend and neighbor. Those who knew him would say that he was always truthful, said what he meant and meant what he said. He was a member of Roland Creek Baptist Church in Nantahala where he was baptized. Visitation will be from 6:00-9:00pm at Crisp Funeral Home on Friday May 4th with funeral services Saturday at 2:00pm at the funeral home and burial in Swain Memorial Park.
