Sorry to hear about Big Mamma. It was always a pleasure to be in her company. She had a signature wit about her and I always loved her since of humor and the easy way she could engage people to have a conversation with her. Nobody was a stranger for very long and she could turn a quiet and introverted group of people lazing around into a hive of boisterous activity and laughter soon after arrival. I loved her because she loved the world around her and the people in it. Rest in peace, Irma.

On behalf of the family, I wanted to thank everyone who attended mother's service and visitation. I especially want to thank those who participated in her care and support, and offered kind words along the way. My brother John, sister in law Pat, and my sister Evelyn gave her outstanding care over the years along with her caregivers, but none of it would have been possible had it not been for the support of the local community and churches. Everyone's kindness is greatly appreciated. Mother lived a full life, and for the most part was sharp as a tack until the end. Thank you.

Irma (Big Momma) was a special gal loved by all. I first got to know her when she stopped at Lauada Grocery/gas station. She and Irene Parton could make anything funny - from stubbed toes to hemorrhoids to kudzu. I never saw anyone with so much spunk as Irma. And after reading family notes on Facebook, her wisdom, determination and love of family made her the special person she was.
Her time was done on earth. But we will see her later. Love and hugs to all the family.

I’ll never forget these seven lessons I learned from Irma Herrin:
1. How much butter should go into a big pot of mashed potatoes? The answer: More. Whatever you’ve put in, just put in a little more. And it’s gonna need some salt as well.
2. A little sour cream, a splash of orange juice, a squeeze of honey, a spoonful of powdered sugar, and a finely chopped strawberry makes an excellent dip for seasonal fruit.
3. It’s still possible to serve an over-cooked turkey with a liberal application of turkey broth sprinkled over the slices.
4. Today’s leftover mashed potatoes make an excellent starter for tomorrow’s Potato Soup “soup du jour.”
5. There’s always side work to be done. You’ll never have enough potatoes peeled until the restaurant is about to close for the season, so if you’ve got a free moment, head to the back porch with your peeling knife.
6. Be good to your dishwasher, because if they leave, you’ll be doing the dishes and mopping the floors.
7. Flat top griddles are easy to clean if you boil off the grease with a couple of cups of white vinegar while the griddle is still hot. .
I’m sure there are other lessons she taught me, things I do now automatically without even thinking about them, things that show others that someone took an interest in teaching me how to work my way around a kitchen. Students in the culinary arts today would pay thousands of dollars today for the education I received while standing beside the short lady in the funny hat and brown smock. I — and anyone who’s ever eaten at my table — owe your mother a debt we can never repay. I’m grateful for the time she invested in me, and the lessons I learned from her. I would not be the man I am today, nor would my waistline be quite so...”healthy”...if not for Irma’s influence. The world is a little smaller, and food doesn’t taste quite as good, with the knowledge that she’s no longer with us. I’m sure, however, that the angels in heaven are really enjoying their first plates of her biscuits and gravy, and someday I believe we’ll all do the same. Godspeed, Irma. I’ll miss you.

I remember Irma being a great supporter of our Swain County Band. She was so much fun to be around! She loved to laugh and we loved her. She traveled with us on band trips and was so very proud of “her kids” which we all were. She was so proud of her own children. Joe, I am sorry you had to say good-bye to your mama. But she couldn’t have loved you any more or been any prouder of you. Rest assured, you were a present and active part of her life. Those memories are forever yours. I love you, my friend.

Family, I'm so sorry for your loss. I hadn't seen Irma in years but I thought of her often. I was one of the Stecoah Kids that would catch the bus there, at the county line, and ride on to school at Bryson. We would wait for the bus inside the store with Irma and June. She was very good to me and the others kids that would be waiting. She seemed to always keep a big bucket of bubble gum on the counter because she new we loved it and she knew we'd just about buy all of it too!! When I was around her or would see her, even after I graduated and grew up, there was never a dull moment. She was a character and was always the same friendly person when I'd see her. She made an imprint on me and I loved her. My prayers are with all of you.

Chris & family- I know this is a hard time, however it is a wonderful time for Big Momma she was so strong and independent that she wouldn't have wanted to be anywhere else. May you find comfort that she isn't suffering anymore instead her and my dad ( the two biggest cut ups I know ) are making everyone laugh on the streets of glory. Wow what a legacy she left behind that will live on through her children

I am sure Heaven's gates opened up with lots of jolly laughter as Miss Irma entered. That woman could make a clown laugh.
Yes, Irma was known for her devine cooking ability and her willingness to share. I truly enjoyed the many years that I worked with Irma at the Nantahala Village. We would be so busy at times that we didn't know up from down, but if Irma was cooking you better believe we got the job done and with lots of laughter along the way. When the job was complete and the clean-up began Irma was sure to lead in a song or two, and those songs were always spiritual songs.
One of her favorite word usages was, "You mark my word," and she would point that crooked pointer finger as she said what ever was to follow. Well, you can mark your word, Irma Ann Brown Herrin is pointing to all the folks she is now being reunited with, and I am certain she gave her Heavenly Father a huge bear hug. Life here on earth will not be the same without her.
Love to all her family especially Francis, Evelyn, John, Joe, and Chris.
With much respect,
Connie Allen
