I am so sorry for your loss and for Kina's passing. Doug and Kina were like second parents to me. I feel so bad about losing contact, but was thankful to have reconnected later on. Kina was a beautiful person and an inspiration to everyone around. She will be missed.

There are no words to describe the respect I have for this warrior woman. She humbled me with her desire to extend genuine love and concern for her fellow man, her country and her Tribe. It was an honor to work with her trying to improve the lives of our people. She gave her time, her knowledge and self to step up and lead by example and not by the status quo. I am proud that she called upon me for advice, and I am proud that we worked together and believed that there is always hope. She cared for us, all of us, and she wanted to make our lives better. And, she sure did. I will stand behind her memory with my head bowed, my heart heavy, but I will continue to voice the principles she stood for which were simple. A better life for all Cherokee people. It is rare that a woman commands the gratitude of her nation, her Cherokee Nation, but Bernice did this by proving that you don't have to be elected to lead. You just have to stand on your beliefs, and enforce the wisdom of our elders. She knew who she was and where she came from, traveling the world keeping us safe. I know she was alone out there sometimes, but I also know she looked into her heart and saw and heard the people she knew as family, and friends and neighbors. Her strength and her fortitude came from these mountains, and her good senses and judgement came from that. The last time we spoke, a few weeks ago at the council house after a meeting on how to help young mothers and babies born addicted, she told me about the cancer and we cried. She knew, she shared, and we hugged. Like a great leader should, she made me promise that the issues she inspired would not fall by the roadside. I thanked her and told her that the fires she started will burn and a brighter better future would happen for our people. Smart, brave, beautiful, funny, compassion, loyalty, family are the words that describe her. And the same words come to me that came to me for another veteran and leader from Big Cove, proverbs 29-18,Where there is no vision, the people perish. Bernice Wilnoty Swayney was a woman of hope, service, commitment and vision. More of us should try to be more like her. Sgi
