Obituary of Lelon Walter Greene

Reverend Lelon W. Greene of the Alarka Community passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 21 while camping at Hiawassee, Georgia on Lake Chatuge. He has been a Baptist Minister for over 55 years, Pastoring Mt. Vernon Free Will Baptist Church, Balsam Grove Free Will Baptist Church on Caney Fork and Conley's Creek Free Will Baptist Church which was his first and last to Pastor when he resigned July, 2015 due to his health. He was a faithful member to the Alarka Fire Department since it was organized. He was a Veteran of the United States Army. He was preceded in death by his parents, Thurman and Ollie Lindsay Green, his brothers, Sylvester Green and Clyde Jones, Sister and brother-in-law, Irene and G.C. Oliver, and two nephews, Mike Jones and Chuck Sawyer. He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Elsie Cloer Greene and his favorite companion, Jazzi; sisters, Carolyn Greene Cloer (Bud) of Bryson City; Kathleen Green Smithson (Ronnie) of Columbia, Tennessee; Allie Fair Greene Sawyer of Asheville, sister-in-law, Glenda Maney (Charlie); a niece, Sheila Cloer Durham (John) and nephew, Gary Cloer (Marlena) who were like his own children, 5 great nieces and nephews, Cody, Katelyn, and Kasey Cloer, and Ryan and Evan Durham, who he claimed as grandchildren and a special friend to the family, Elsie Tolley. Funeral Services will be Saturday at 3:00 PM at Crisp Funeral Home with Revs. Jim Frady, Eugene Moore and Leonard Lindsay officiating. Burial will be at Swain Memorial Park. Members of the Alarka Fire Department and nephew, Gary Cloer will be pallbearers. The family will receive friends Friday from 7:00 PM – 9:00 PM at the Funeral Home. At other times they will be at Bud and Carolyn Cloer's on Deep Creek. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Alarka Fire Department at PO Box 2028, Bryson City, NC 28713.
