I met Mr. JC Wachacha twice and I will never forget him. I wish I could’ve spent more time with him. It is obvious that he left behind a legacy and will be dearly missed by many. The first time we met, I was initially very nervous because he was sitting behind a miles-high conference table as a member of the Cherokee Speakers Council. With his easy smile and kind words, along with a joke or two from JC and other council members, I quickly realized I was in good company. JC taught me the Cherokee word for Nantahala and I've been practicing it based on a recording he let me make after the council meeting. He asked about my progress on the pronunciation the second time we met, this past summer when I returned to Cherokee with my band Nantahala to play a show. JC and his wife Jeanne came out to listen and support us on a beautiful but rainy afternoon, and the place seemed to light up when they arrived. Thank you, JC for your teachings, your humor, and I’m sure many more qualities I will never get the chance to know. My condolences go out to your family and your community. I worked with JC when I started at Transit after moving back to Cherokee. We delivered lunches to the homebound seniors. I was filling in for the driver who usually did the Soco run that day. I had only been on the job a week or so and hadn't lived in Cherokee for several years. As long as the client had a mailbox with a number I was good. One delivery on Wright's Creek had no mailbox. I kept looking for the house but couldn't locate it. The dispatcher keeps telling me go past so and so's house, which would have been fine if I had known the people living there. I kept looking and driving and telling her where I was. No luck we're both getting frustrated and since we are on the radio other drivers are listening. They are trying to help as well. All of a sudden JC comes on,"Joe look for the big pig". That's all he said. A few houses later I see a house with a pig lying on the porch. The pig is as long as the picture window it's lying under. I pull in get out go to the door, it's the right house. That's my friend JC when you needed help he was going to step up and help any way he could.
