When my husband I got married, Shirley insisted that we have it at her house. It was only a couple of months after my Mother had died, so she knew that I was feeling lost. She also insisted that I stay all night with her the night before, to uphold tradition, so Tim couldn't see me before the wedding. Qualla Arts and Craft supplied the chairs and a couple of tables (Tim loaded those up) with her help. She took me to breakfast the morning of the wedding, I could barely eat, I was so nervous. Then she took me to get my hair and makeup done. The stylist looked at her and said, "Shirley, this girl is so nervous, you better take her by the casino and get her a vodka shot!" LOL! After my hair was done, we went by Ingles to pick up a couple of last minute things and one of our mutual friends who was there working the florist area put a daisy in my braid, since daisies were in my bouquet from our friend Diane. When we got back to her house, some of my family had already arrived (my two first cousins, Sam and Kevin, both preachers, were marrying us) and my only surviving Aunt (Jean Bennett) so I ran upstairs and started getting ready. My Dad got there shortly after, along with my husband to be and our friends Ken and Loretta. Shirley came upstairs and handed me a box and said that it was from my Mom. I didn't question it, I knew Shirley has flashes like that sometimes, as do I. I opened the box and it was this beautiful carved turtle necklace and earrings. Yes, I cried and ruined my makeup and had to redo part of it. After that, my Dad came up and I was vibrating so much that I couldn't even attach the clasp on my necklace. He put it on for me. A few minutes later, Shirley came up and said, "I brought you some ice water, it's hot up here." It was hot, for real, so I took a great big gulp. It was straight vodka on ice, LOL, she had heard the hairdresser. And it was the right thing, it settled me down enough not to be a blubbering mess throughout the entire ceremony. Since we forgot any music, my Dad sang "Here Comes the Bride, big fat and wide" while he was walking me to Tim (he's a nut) and then we had a nice spread for lunch. That's the kind of friend she was. I could share a million more memories, like when a woman in Walmart thought we were sisters when we were oohing and aahing over Christmas ornaments, or the time she found 50 in a restaurant parking lot just as we were both talking about being broke, there are so many and they are priceless to me. I loved her dearly.

She was the best friend I've ever had and one of the best people I've ever known. She was kind and generous to a fault and would help anyone, anytime, anywhere. I love you Squirrely ( for Dad, lol). <3

Mandy, Buck and families,
I was so sad to hear the news about your mother. We worked together and I always enjoyed her humor and actions. We all had some good times together at Qualla Arts. I pray you find comfort in the knowledge that she loved her children and family with all her heart.
My prayers are with you all.

Mandy and Buck,
My thoughts and prayers are with you as you grieve the loss of your lovely mother. She was a loving and dedicated mother and grandmother. I can't recall a conversation with her that she didn't share about both of you and her grandchildren.
May you find joy in all the memories.
