Obituary of Lois King
Please share a memory of Lois to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
On Jul 19, 2021 God sent special Angels to take Lois to the new home he had prepared for her. One of her grandchildren said it best... “She has won the Victory”. In the summer of 1960 a friend of Henry and Lois set them up on a blind date, it was a hayride. They fell in love and were together for almost 60 years. They are now reunited after a short time apart, as Henry has been waiting at Heaven’s gates for her to join him.
Lois and Henry owned and operated the iconic King’s Grocery until Henry’s passing in May of 2020. Earlier on in life Lois was a school bus driver for Swain County Schools, and the kids were always amazed at how far she could stretch her short legs to press the pedals on those big ole’ buses!
Lois was always an active church member, taking part in many rolls of church service as well as being a member of the Sawmill Hill Quartet. Her alto voice was one of the prettiest this side of Heaven. Lois was known for her wonderful country cooking, and no one ever left her table hungry. Each and every one of her amazing biscuits were marked by her hand print. It is rumored that her fried sweet potatoes (the sweet potatoes Henry loved to grow) are how she got her son-in-law Mike.
Lois had many talents, but the one quality we would like to share with others is her faithfulness with prayer. She was a strong believer in laying your troubles at Jesus’ feet and participating in intercessory prayer for others.
Lois has battled with dementia for several years, but there are two things the awful disease did not take from her. The ability to pray, and to sing her favorite hymns.
Lois is preceded in death by her husband, Henry King, parents Clinton and Ollie Cook Greene, and brother Boyd Greene.
Lois is survived by her children, David and Sandy King, Elizabeth and Mike Cooper, grandchildren, Katie and Ben Gunter, Ben and Brenae King, John Holden Cooper, and Joseph King, great grandchildren Ellie, David, Ben “LB” Gunter, and soon to arrive Riley King. Sister, Ernestine Dice, sisters-in-law Patricia Greene, Rachel and Roy Griggs, and Anna Mae Cooper.
Lois carried these words in her Bible (these are the words she lived by): “Others”
Lord, help me live from day to day
In such a self-forgetful way
That even when I kneel to pray
My prayer shall be for – Others.
Help me in all the work I do
To ever be sincere and true
And know that all I do for You
Must needs be done for – Others.
And when my work on earth is done
And my new work in heaven’s begun
May I forget the crown I’ve won
While thinking still of – Others.
Others, Lord, yes others,
Let this my motto be;
Help me to live for others
That I may live like Thee.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers that you donate to a local charity, to your church, or perform an act of kindness of your choosing for “Others”.
The family would like to thank all of those who have been so kind during Lois’s years of declining health. Your kindness did make a difference during the difficult journey.
The family will receive friends from 1:00pm until 3:00pm on Sunday, July 25th at Crisp Funeral Home. The service will follow at 3:00pm
Internment will be held at Swain Memorial Park.
