Carl M. Hughes, 83, of the Lower Alarka Community went home to be with the Lord Wednesday, August 19, 2009 at his residence. A lifelong resident of Swain County, he was the son of the late Edd and Annie Pickens Hughes. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy having served during W.W.II. He was a retired volunteer Fireman for the Bryson City Fire Department with 26 years of service. He had worked his whole life in various jobs in Swain County and at last worked for Clampitt Hardware for the past 2 decades. He was preceded in death by the mother of his children, Gloria Lindsay Hughes; 4 brothers; and 3 sisters. He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Marie Byrd Hughes; one daughter, Carolyn H. Lossiah and husband Moses of Cherokee; three sons, Johnny Hughes of Bryson City, Larry Hughes and wife JoAnne of Bryson City, Michael Hughes and wife Lisa of Keller, TX.; three stepsons, Mark Cook and wife Amy of Savannah, GA, Kevin Cook and wife Susan of Loris, SC., Keith Cook of Whittier; 16 grand and step grandchildren; 10 great and stepgreatgrandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in the chapel of Crisp Funeral Home. Rev. Peter Mudge will officiate with burial in Brendle Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
