Whittier Dateline: Calvin Ray Swayney, 63, of Whittier, went home to be with the Lord, Monday, December 6th, 2010 in a Buncombe County Hospital. A lifelong resident of Cherokee, he was the son of Ollie Mae Swiney Steels of Knoxville, TN and the late Leonard Thadius Swayney. He was a member of the Cherokee Pure Country Band where he played Rhythm Guitar and also sang. He was also preceded in death by a son, Leonard Ray Swayney. He is survived by one daughter, Starlene Elizabeth Swayney and companion Efrain Garcia of Cherokee, a longtime companion, Lynn McClure of Whittier, four brothers, Elmer Lee Swayney of Cherokee, Floyd James Swayney of TN., Billy Joe Swayney of Cherokee, and Charles Swayney of TN., one sister, Joyce Bryant of Easley, SC, 7 grandchildren, Trista, Lucy, Sissy, Thadius Ray, Tabitha Mae, Olivia and Emily Swayney all of Cherokee, 2 great grandsons, Lucas and Joseph of Cherokee. Funeral Services will be held 2:00 PM Thursday at Big Cove Baptist Church. Rev. James (Bo) Parris will officiate with burial in the Swayney Family Cemetery. The body will be taken to the Church at 4:00 PM Wednesday by Crisp Funeral Home to await the hour of Service. An online register is available at www.crispfuneralhome.org
